The institutional restructuring of the Pannon Philharmonic, in 2003, created the possibility to renew the musical life of Pécs and the South-Transdanubian Region and to complete the concert palette and repertoire. In a unique way in the country, two ensembles work together under the hood of one art institution: a 73-people Symphony Orchestra and a 22-strong Symphonietta.
As a chamber symphonic orchestra, the Pécs Symphonietta plays a prominent role in the musical productions of the National Theatre of Pécs. Thanks to the 45 years of playing opera s at the National Theatre of Pécs, it raises the artistic quality of the productions with its rich repertoire and experience. The Pécs Symphonietta undertakes a major role in the music education of the Southern Transdanubian Region's youth; it gives 52 concerts a year for young people in major cities of three counties. In the ensemble’s plans for the future, the symphonic concerts are emphasised.
Its excellent musicians and structural endowments enable the orchestra to display and to show to its audience those rarely performed pieces of musical literature that are orchestrated between the classical chamber symphonic works and the ones written for a symphony orchestra. That repertoire has never been offered in Pécs and its surroundings; to fill this hiatus is a duty, a professional challenge, and above all an exciting expedition roaming.
The foundation of the orchestra created opportunities for that that the high culture and the joy of visiting concerts can be present in the medium sized towns of the region, as a daily pleasure. The Pécs Symphonietta – according to its plans – performs as a chamber symphony orchestra already in this season, at concerts in Pécs and the region other towns (Siófok, Dombóvár, Mohács, Barcs, Szigetvár, Paks, Siklós).
