The first Budapest concert of this autumn is framed by two dominant composition of the Russian Romanticism.
Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s works are connected not only at this concert programme, the two composers knew each other well. Tchaikovsky’s rarely played Manfred Symphony, based on Lord Byron's dramatic poem, had been reworked by Rachmaninov. Tchaikovsky, being satisfied with the transcripts, encouraged his younger colleague to keeping on; and he bacame one of the most significant Russian composers, creating music with passion.
His Piano Concerto No.2 is another proof for that; it was dedicated to his psychiater, who helped him out of his neurose and creative crisis. At the 1901 premiere of the piece, which brought him a great success, the solo was played by the composer himself. Thus, on September 30, the 23-year-young pianist, Charlotte Coulaud, who has kept winning the competitions full with the most talented young musicians in France, is following Rachmaninov’s footsteps.
