In Russia and Finland, the orchestra works, symphonies, concertos for a long time had followed the German symphonic tradition. In the second half of the 19th century Tchaikovsky and Sibelius, among other composers sought to find their own national voice. For Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto in B minor, Ukrainian folk songs served as basis of several themes. You can not find such a specific folkloric basis in Sibelius’s Symphony No.1, but it is known that the composer turned wit interest towards the Finnish epos, especially the Kalevala.
