In the tone poem for orchestra Pohjolan tytär (Pohjola's Daughter) of Jean Sibelius a northern beauty weaving a silver canvas on a rainbow bridge inflames the old Väinämöinen. However after facing impossible challenges the old man walks away with disappointment. The music very explicitly shows us the waking flame, the wonderful vision and the lost hopes. The Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso for violin and orchestra by Camille Saint-Saëns is woven through with the world of Spanish dances. The chatty violin piece introduced by twanged orchestral chords is followed by cravingly singing rondo themes and episodes of Spanish atmosphere. The Six Humoresques are lesser known pearls of the oeuvre of Sibelius. These witty and free miniatures are dominated by the solo violin, but their harmonies are the farthest possible from sparkling technical fireworks. Five Scheherazade stories are told from the Thousand and One Night in the programmatic suite by Rimsky-Korsakov. This is the most often played piece of the author and it has even been staged. The music enchants the listeners with its usual magnificent orchestration and its oriental atmosphere.
