About the Programme

The main attraction of the Evening with Beats and Hits is the Drums, drums, drums, a work by Gergely Vajda, who has been active in the last decade mainly in the United States. But in addition to this premiere, other special 20th-century compositions are going to be played, too. Kurt Weill wrote his Threepenny Opera for Bertold Brecht’s play of the same name in 1928. However, few people know about the opera, which was a big premiere success and has been on the programmes since then, that three decades later, in 1956, Weill also wrote a six-movement orchestral suite from it. The Concerto in D Major written for string orchestra is the  first "footprint" of Igor Stravinsky’s US-era;  the Russian-born composer, who had lived  earlier longer time in Paris and Switzerland, moved to the United States after the Second World War, and let premiered his Concerto soon in December 1945. There is an American aspect in Hindemith’s Konzertmusik (Concert Music), as well, because this piece was created on the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s commission. In this work, according to the composer, "quartets play music next to one another, a string quartet extended for a string orchestra, four horns, four trumpets, and a quartet made up of three trombones and a tuba”.
