The Suite in D Major composed for oboe, trumpet, strings, timpani, and continuo is one of the most popular and most played works by Johann Sebastian Bach. It can partly owe its reputation to the second movement, entitled Air, which has many arrangements, even by jazz musicians and pop-rock bands. Bach's contemporary and friend, Georg Philip Telemann composed a total of five flute concerto (if the double competition is counted here, too). Now, you can listen to the Concerto in D major. The program will be closed by a special work of the third prominent figure of German baroque, Georg Friedrich Handel: Apollo and Daphne, a cantata, composed in Venice in 1709 and perfected a year later in Hanover, which kind of foreshadowed the Halle-born master’s success in the coming decades, in the genres of operetta and oratorio.
