About the Programme

Penderecki’s Violin Concerto No.1 could be a film music for a Hitchcock movie; it is so haunting. All of the dark hues, the somber chord progressions, and the dirge-like motifs are embodying the deep pain.  At the time of the premiere, it was a shocking impact on the audience. Now, Barnabás Kelemen is performing it. As a counterpoint to the somber colors, the other work you can hear at the concert is Beethoven's Symphony No.2, one of the composer's most jocund works. This is interesting, especially when you know the fact that Beethoven just faced the inevitability of the fatal bane, his deafness, during composing of this symphony.
