About the Programme

The Dances of Galánta, one of Kodály's most popular orchestral compositions focuses on the typically Hungarian dance music, the music on recruiting (verbunkos). The original songs appeared in a German collection; their collector had heard them from the famous gypsy band of Galánta, as well did Kodály, who spent his childhood there. The MR Symphony Orchestra, led by Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi had put in their programme another grandiose work as well, Orff's Carmina Burana, the source of which is also a collection. The composer selected a bunch of Medieval Latin, German and French poems, it contained. In addition to the soloists, the choir - this time the MR Choir - also plays a major role in the work.
