In 1809, the director of the Viennese Burgtheater, planning to stage Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's, Egmont, which had been completed in 1787, commissioned Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) to compose music to accompany the drama. Since his respect for the writer and his own political conviction rejecting all kinds of external oppression, he was happy to respond to the request. The accompanying music, which was finally presented in May 1810, is known today because of its overture, one of the very often played independent concert pieces of his oeuvre. A few years earlier Violin Concerto (1806) was commissioned too: Franz Clement, a well- known contemporary violinists asked Beethoven to write the piece, and he played at its premiere, taking place at Theather an der Wien. Besides The Ninth Symphony, Beethoven's Fifth is certainly his most played work; it is a must-have on every major orchestra’s repertoire, no season could go away without playing it. Its popularity could be due to its extraordinary compactness and logic: it is a work that is able to bring the symphonic form, from the 19th century increasingly more and more complex, closer to a wider audience.
