About the Programme

Richard Strauss composed his symphonic poem by following Cervantes' novel, Don Quixote. The cello part, impersonating the title character was originally written to the first cellists of the orchestra, but it soon became a part of the solo literature. In fact, about some soloists who kept it on their repertoire and often played it , such as Hugo Becker and Paul Tortelier, their peers just talked jokingly as Don Quixote. This time, the clumsy knight would live by the cello playing of Jan-Erik Gustafsson, who will be the soloist of Dohnányi’s rarely heard late-Romantic Konzertstück, too. The orchestra is going to be conducted by Tibor Bogányi.
