About the Programme

Antonio Vivaldi wrote more than twenty-five cello concertos but the RV531 concerto in G minor is the only one composed for two cellos. The Cello Concerto in A Minor, completed in 1850, is also unique in Schumann's oeuvre but organically connected into the line that starts with the Piano Concerto in A Minor from 1845 and culminating with the Violin Concerto in D Minor from 1853. The cello played an important role in Richard Strauss's art, as well; it is enough to think about the piano trios or the symphonic poem Don Quixote. We can hear a symphonic poem (Till Eugenspiegel) this evening, too; even more interesting, however, the instrumental version of one of the composer’s most successful operas, The Woman without a Shadow, which could be rarely heard at Hungarian concert halls, with Strauss's subtitle symphonic fantasy.
