The Mass of Berlin by the Estonian Arvo Pärt has in its original form been written for soloists and organ; the version for choir and string quartet is an adaptation. The author uses his own technique coming around the triads, the so called tintinnabuli derived from the Latin tintinnabullum meaning bell. This style was inspired by the milieu and music of churches. According to the thoughts of the author this leads to a place where we can leave our burdens and can search with open heart the answer to the questions of our lives. After the death of the author 38 minutes of orchestrated music have been found: this is the main part of the work by Frank Martin with the title Cantate pour le Temps de Noël (Christmas cantata). The cantata has been given the final form by Maria, the widow of the composer and by the director of the Music Academy of Luzern, Alois Koch. In this work written under the influence of the mosaics of Ravenna and the Gregorian music the statically positioned main characters (soloists) are set before a scintillatingly colourful background. We can observe the Christmas scene in the lights flickering through the glass windows of a medieval church.
