About the Programme

Francois Poulenc dedicates his Stabat Mater to the memory of his painter friend Christian Bérard. The oeuvre composed for a soprano soloist, a mixed choir and orchestra amalgamates the finesses of the beauty of Versailles with the outlining of noble and simple lines of classic temples. The balance is astonishing between the discreet and the overwhelming movements. The piece’s colours are dark, but it is started with a clear voice and its finale is also a liberatory ringing to eternity with such a clear soul. A poignant piece of Richard Strauss’s “absolute music” is the Metamorphoses. The 80 years old master experienced the bombings of Munich, Dresden and Weimar in World War II as the greatest tragedy of his life. Mourning for Munich – this is the title of the first draft of the oeuvre and elsewhere we can read a quotation from Goethe: “Nobody comes to his senses.” The gloomy start invokes the mourning march from Beethoven’s Eroica, but the piece is still not characterized by despair. This is the resume of Strauss’s artistic existence, according to his own words the reflection of the whole of his life.
