About the Programme

Levente Gyöngyösi is an outstanding representative of his generation, winner of several competitions, and owner of prestigious awards. He usually composes on request; this time, the Pannon Philharmonic is performing his latest piece, the Sinfonia Concertante. 100 years ago, there happened at another show that police had to be called to calm down the audience. The ballet premiere of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and its following five other performances got into scandals night after night. Despite the mayhem, the piece was played through. As the composer recalled it, at first he has got the musical ideas, and the idea of an ancient Russian pagan ritual sacrifice of a young girl to the spring god came later. The music and the choreography of this work was revolutionary new; the sound and the sight shocked the audience. Many a men consider the Rite of Spring as one of the fundamental works of the 20th century that had a tremendous influence on later composers, and the whole musical thinking, not just classical music.

The concert is joint production of the Palace of Arts and of the Pannon Philharmonic.
