A French composer of the second half of the 20th century, Henri Dutilleux was commissioned for this Cello Concerto by Mstislav Rostropovich. The meditative-mystical piece with a night-mood got the title Tout un monde lointain (“A Whole World Distant”). The work amazes the listener with its delicate orchestration and superbly virtuoso solos. In the program, there is an odd Dutilleux-work as well: the Danse fantastique that was erased from the work list of his by himself but it has not got forgotten.
Claude Debussy was one of them who considered the symphony as something outdated. But he was interested in anything exotic and picturesque, in the beauty-law of “the magical harmony of art and nature”. All this magic melts together in his astonishing creation, The Sea (La mer).
With composing his Bolero, Maurice Ravel was looking for the possibility of working out of a musical theme without any development, but with the strengthening the orchestral presentation. The result is this musical stuff, beginning with a drum ostinato, arranged always differently, and coloured with countless hues and continuous crescendo.
