A young student at the Paris Conservatoire, Charles Gounod was present at one of the rehearsals of Berlioz's dramatic symphony, Romeo and Juliet, in 1839.He was so impressed with the work that a few years later he used a libretto with the same title for composing some parts. The entire opera was not ready yet: its premiere was in 1867. The libretto is by J. Barbier and M. Carré's work; according to the opinion of experts, this adaptation of the countless ones follows Shakespeare's play most smoothly. This Gounod opera is the only one besides the Faust that is always in t e repertoire of the world's opera stages.
