About the Programme

One of the small number of works of programme music works by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Pastorale Symphony showing pictures of rural life, is a frequent piece at concerts halls around the world. Unlike the two pieces by Camille Saint-Saëns, you can hear now. The first one is a symphonic poem, the Phaeton, which tells the story of a tragic figure of Greek mythology. Phaeton was the one who tried to steer the sun-car of his father, Helios, but he could not command halt to the berserk horses, so when he got too close to the Earth, Zeus intervened and punished the irresponsible riders with his thunderbolts. The composer built his musical work from the most important motifs of the myth. The last piano concerto of Saint-Saëns, who was also an internationally renowned pianist, bears the "Egyptian" subtitle. The work that was penned onto paper on the composer's Luxor vacation is certainly one of the most exciting pieces of the exotica-loving French master, in which the elements of European Romanticism are mixed with melodic treasures of the Maghreb region, as well as Javanese and Spanish motifs.
