About the Programme

We have only the first movement of Mahler’s 10th Symphony; because of his early death, he could not  complete the other four. The private life crisis, and wavering mood of the 50-year-old composer at the peak of his career brought deterioration of health. This is a complaint we can hear in the dissonant chords of the symphony. Bartók also was already struggling with the disease causing his death, when he composed the Concerto. The pain of homesickness sounds in  the fourthmovement: through his years in America, Bartók hoped to return home, but the world war did not allow it. The two  ’serious’ works frame an ’easy’ and cheerful one: Dohnányi’ Variations on a children's song well-known by all of us written with sparkling humour . The soloist of the virtuoso piece written in a form of a piano concerto is Jenő Jandó; András Ligeti is conducting the orchestra.
