About the Programme

Who likes the French music, this time will have a special experience: you can listen to the works of three Gallic composers, who are not everyday guests of the Hungarian concert halls. The earliest one of the pieces (1882) is an epic symphonic poem, telling the story of a Count fighting against the dark forces, La Chasseur Maudit (The Accursed Hunter), which sometimes ewokes Berliozian allusions. The French-Swiss Honegger’s large -scale oratorio, Jeanne d'Arc au bucher (Joan of Arc at the stake, 1938) is remarkable not only because of its topics; its orchestration is special, too: a major role is played in it by an instrument, which was named after its inventor Ondes Martenot – it is considered as the ancestor of the synthesizer. In the Triton, the group of contemporary French musicians, Henri Tomasi had a good working relationship with Honegger, but he disliked the recent trends of music composition –like using electronic musical instruments– on the first place, he is rather known for his concertos written for woodwind and brass instruments (e.g. flute, trumpet, clarinet, horn, and trombone).
