About the Programme

Program:

  • Rossini: William Tell Vilmos - overture
  •
Rachmaninov: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
  •
Kodály: Concerto

The Overture written to Gioacchino Rossini’s last opera, William Tell refers to the story of the opera only in mood; the musical motives are independent from the happenings on the stage. The 4-part music evokes the fabulous landscapes of the Swiss Alps, with knitting peaceful-pastoral and dynamic-turbulent pictures. It can be heard not only in concert halls but in movies and animation films as well.

Paganini’s Caprice No.24 for solo violin has inspired many composers for recreating it, including Sergei Rachmaninoff. His Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a piano concerto-like work with a sequence of 24 variations. The typical characters of a concerto’s movements are put together to a single movement, opening the rich treasury of variation possibilities.

The Concerto by Zoltán Kodály belongs to those works that the master always wanted himself to conduct. While conducting it, he often reformed the piece, mainly in the tempi and the vocal parts. By nature, it is “with its folk baroque and former residential sound as it were a Hungarian concerto grosso that had not been written in its own time”. (János Breuer)
