America's most adventurous string ensemble, the Kronos Quartet has been presenting its newer and newer visions that use the potential of this strictly classical genre, the string quartets, in the extreme - for almost forty years,. In 1973, when the Kronos Quartet was formed in San Francisco, there began a new chapter in the history of string quartets. That is because this company was not willing to "bother" with the classical repertoire; they focused on only the 20th century, but not just on the masters of contemporary music.
On the stage: David Harrington, John Sherba –violin, Hank Dutt –viola, Jeffrey Zeigler – cello
They put in their repertoire beside Bartók, Schoenberg, Webern, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Cage, Boulez, György Kurtág, Ligeti (and others) - without genre or styl boundaries – works of the most significant contemporary jazz, rock and world music composers. Thus, in the repertoire of the orchestra, which has recorded more than fifty album, contains more than 500 pieces, including compositions by Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Jimi Hendrix, John Zorn, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, István Mártha, the Argentinean Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Golijov, the Gambian Foday Musa Suso, the Sudanese Hamza El Din, the Azerbaijani Franghiz Ali Zadeh, and the Pakistani Pandit Pran Nath.
