About the Programme

Program:

  • Dohnányi: Symphonic Minutes
  • Tchaikovszky: Rococo Variations
  • Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.5

Although not unique in the Hungarian music history, the festive program celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Philharmonic Society’s Orchestra (1833) is rare. There had their premieres of works by Bartók, Kodály,and Ernő Dohnányi. He contributed to the festivities with his Symphonic Minutes (op.36). The piece is a symphonic work related to the divertimento, with witty ideas, so characteristic for this composer.
During the critical period of his life, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was thinking about ending his musician carrier – while he wrote music tirelessly: he composed his Rococo Variations for cello solo and orchestra (op.33). Tchaikovsky’s theme choice has an 18th-century-like taste; his implementation mirrors his adoration for Mozart.
Tchaikovsky always had doubts in himself and his music. He was feverishly searching for “The form”: such logic that might hammer the different elements together into an organically complete chain. In the case of his Symphony No.5 in E minor (op.64), the link, which goes through all the four movements as a base motive, is a detail from a Glinka-opera. This motto is rather elegiac in the opening movement, but gradually turns into a rousing victory march of the finale.
