About the Programme

Program:

  • Khachaturian: Flute Concerto in D major
  • Berlioz: Fantastic Symphony

The Armenian-Soviet Aram Khachaturian’s Flute Concerto is in deed a transcription. The composer himself encouraged Jean-Pierre Rampal to make it. The flutist wrote a cadence to the Violin Concerto in D minor, which was composed in 1940; he actually tried to keep the original version, as far as the instrument might let it. There is a thematic relationship in the different movements, the final rondo – unusually for a Soviet composer – shows effects of American folk tunes.
Hector Berlioz composed the Fantastic Symphony with the subtitle “Episodes from an Artist’s Life”, during the revolution of 1830. In the story, the artist falls in love with a girl, whose character is turning into a musical theme. This is the “idée fixe” that comes back in every movement, in different forms. The story in head words: 1st movement: Dreams, Obsessions, then the 2nd movement’s ball after the harp solo, 3rd movement: Meadow Scene, 4th movement: Progression to the Scaffold, finale: Witch Saturday, Dies irae. This work, with its parade-like ideas, was inspired by autobiographical events.
