About the Programme

József Joachim, a celebrated violinist of the 19th-century said that the Germans have four violin concertos.  Beethoven’s one is the greatest, Brahms’s one is the most serious,, Mendelssohn’s one is the most intimate, but the richest and most charming ist Max Bruch’s work. Although he didn’t go into details, Joachim obviously meant the Violin Concerto in G minor. Bruch wrote four other violin concertos and many other works in vain – this composition of him put all of his other creations into the background. Similarly less known is Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s ouvre, although many a man considers him as the best symphonist of the 20th century. Interestingly, his Symphony No.2 has only one slow movement (Adagio), which he saved from his work written and thrown out earlier. Countrary to these composers, Richard Wagner’s name shouldn’t have to be introduced. His Mastersingers of Nuremberg is one of his popular pieces, which is exceptionary because of more than one reason: not like his other stage work, it is an opera buffa, which is based not on mythological but historical facts. From the three-act work, the Dutch composer Henk de Vlieger created a 50-minute-long symphonic compilation.
