When arrived to England in 1826, for the premiere of his last opera, the three-act Oberon, which had been written for a commission from London, Carl Maria von Weber was already gravely ill . The artistic level of the libretto, as well as the lengthy job, burdened with pitfalls, the composer, who had been dissatisfied with his work to the last minute, completed the overture of the piece just a few days before the premiere. Despite the circumstances described above, there is no trace of perfunctoriness in the –also independently- popular overture; this part of the work rightly belongs to the most played and analyzed (orchestral) compositions of Weber, to date. Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphoses, written for Weber themes in 1943, is interesting because it was originally made for the stage, too. Hindemith began to deal with Weber in greater depth on a request of a renowned choreographer, Leonid Mjaszin, He meant his transcriptions written for his compatriot’s four hand piano pieces, and for Turandot, to which also Puccini wrote music, as ballet music; however, this attempt -at that time- failed , and the composer chose the symphonic form. (A decade later, it was made into a ballet in New York). The concert’s programme, which is focusing on Weber, shall be “broken” by the Czech Martinu’s concerto, written in 1931, in which the orchestra is carrying an exciting dialogue not with a soloist, but with a complete string quartet.
