About the Programme

The New Year Gala Concert is a selection of works of European and American composers who were extremely popular at their time and whose popularity has not diminished in the past decades, either. Giuseppe Verdi and Johann Strauss’s works are framing the light and well-known melodies of the two American geniuses, George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. These composers lived in direct energy flow with their audience, their pieces are bringing this directness into the concert hall in January, and so that the released energy of the audience’s clapping to the concert ending Radeczky Marche shall accompany us through the whole year.

„It happened at my firs New Year Concert. As a conductor, I got into such a virtuoso mood that I began to improvise; quasi tested the audience at the Radetzky Marche. At the middle of the piece –to my biggest surprise- the audience reacted for everything, they took seriously my baton moves as  trained pets: kept the tempo, I could even charmed them to do the dynamics. I was completely amazed by this suggestive, mutual attention and being tuned together. I knew immediately that something was born there. Then we named this “phenomenon” as Pécs Applause.”  (Tibor Bogányi)
