About the Programme

Christ’s suffering and death is one the most frequently and in countless time used themes of not only the culture in general but of the arts, so of the history of music. There are a few art works that come in mind of professionals and laymen too, because of their universalness. Johann Sebastian Bach’s two passions that has remained completely, the St Matthias Passio and the St. John Passio are certainly that kind. This time, the Cathedral of Pécs is hosting the latter grandious clerical work, which was written for Good Friday of 1724. The piece, which moves almost two-hundred performers, is based on the passion that could be read in St. John’s Evangelium (book 18 and 19). As a narrator, the Evangelist (tenor) himself is also an important character of the work that follows Christ’s way from the Garden of Gechemane to the crucifixion.
