About the Programme

Borodin composed slowly, since music writing was just his pastime, besides his research of chemistry. According to a legend, he didn’t even write down the overture of Prince Igor; he played it on the piano and his friend, Glazunow wrote it down from memory, after the composer's death. Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, on the contrary, was written in record time. It was sketched by its composer, who had found asylum in music after his short and failed marriage, in just 11 days. The solo part of this popular work is played by Katalin Kokas. Schumann also penned his second symphony in a short time.  However, after that he made a lot of correction and transcription; hence the Symphony in D minor was published as No.4. You will hear now how it sounds under Howard Williams’ baton.
