About the Programme

It is always an important event for the musical life of Pécs, when its honorary citizen, who has been awarded with the Leó Weiner Prize, the Liszt Prize, and the Knight's Cross of Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic, Aurél Tillai is presenting a new composition. Now, the composer, who likes religious themes, composed a cantata honouring the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Before the premiere of that, you can hear the Kossuth Prize-winning composer and folk song collector, László Lajtha’s orchestral work, titled In Memoriam, which was composed in the shadow of the Second World War (in 1941).
The main number of the concert will be one of the most important, and at the same time the most puzzling representative of symphonic literature of the 19th century’s end, who continued Beethoven and Schubert’s his art, but referred with his certain solutions to his modernist contemporaries (e.g. Wagner) and the remote 20th century, Anton Bruckner's Symphony No.4. Among Bruckner’s grandiose symphonies, the fourth one is special because its writer intended it as programme music. The composer wanted to illustrate the waking moments after a night's sleep and the fun of forest hunters in this work, among other things.
