About the Programme

The Passion as a musical genre covers such oratorical, musical works that are retelling Jesus Christ's suffering and death based on the evangelists’ books. We know only two fully remained Passions of the five written by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): the St Matthew Passion and the St. John Passion. Of the two, the St John Passion is more recent: according to some assumption, it was premiered in 1727, to others, in 1729 on Good Friday in Leipzig. The choice of the premiere date could hardly be a coincidence. The monumental work –in terms of scope and apparatus– deals with the suffering and death of Jesus, based on the Gospel of Matthew; its music is tragic and solemn at the same time, so we have to be able to anticipate the resurrection, too. As György Kroó put it in words: the St. Matthew Passion "brings even the crowd scenes of the story to life with extraordinary expressive power [...] and accompanies the Passion’s heroes on their journey, the fate of a loyal, a traitor, a persistent, or a sinner with profound sympathy."
