Although none of the composers on the programme of the Pannonicum Series’s the first concert was a chid of the romantics in the traditional sense; all of them reflected in some way this decisive era in music history. Because of its expressive melodies and richness of sound, Franz Schubert’s Symphony No8, the "Unfinished" is considered one of the forerunners of the romantics. Ravel’s theatrical poem, La Valse is like a memorial of the emblematic dance music of the 19th century, the waltz. Debussy, starting from the legacy of Chopin, Liszt, and Wagner found his own voice, pointing in the direction of the twentieth century modernity, in the turn of the past century. His oeuvre, which is looked at by many a man as related to the impressionist paintings, was accompanied by theatrical works that are popular concert pieces, as well - one of which was the Jeux, written in 1912. Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto (1945) is also a herald of the late romantic idiom.
