About the Programme

At the first act of he concert series playing tribute to a recently deceased prominent personality of the Hungarian music scene, Zoltán Kocsis, the music of mourning, agony, and passing away have the main roles, naturally. "The hour of death is approaching; the soul leaves the body to be perfected in the eternal cosmos in a glorious way that it could not achieve here on Earth." –with these words, Richard Strauss summed the programme of one of his first major symphonic poems, the Death and Transfiguration in 1888. The composer returned to the theme of mourning decades later, in the last hours of the Second World War, in the Four Last Songs and in an orchestral piece entitled Metamorphosis, written for twenty-three stringed instruments. Prior to Strauss's two works, which frame of his life, the performers will play  the American Samuel Barber’s perhaps best known pieces, also often heard at funerals, the Adagio, written in 1936 and one of Beethoven’s most personal concertos, the Fourth Piano Concerto.
