About the Programme

In November 2016, one of the most famous Austrian violinists, who also regularly plays at the Salzburg Festival, Benjamin Schmid will be the guest soloist of the Pannon Philharmonic. He is going to play Béla Bartók’s Violin Concerto No.2, the work completed in 1938, being regarded by the composer himself as the only authentic violin concerto. Although the concerto has three movements, many analysts interpret the composition as an unbreakable unity of movements. Liszt’s symphonic poem, the Opheus, created nearly a century earlier, is characterized by similar cohesion. The specialty of the work is that it was originally written for an opera: it was intended by Liszt as framework music for the 1854 Weimar premiere of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice. As its title reveals, Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet was also inspired by a theatrical work, Shakespeare's classic play of the same title. The fantasy overture, composed in 1869 is an important document about his cooperation with the so-called Balakirev circle and its determining aesthete Vladimir Stasov.
