About the Programme

Program:

  • Rachmaninov: Vocalise (the author’s orchestra version)
  •
Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor
  •
Shostakovich: Symphony No.10 in E minor

Sergei Rachmaninov’s delightful melodies brought him an early success. More bitter was his disappointment after the failure of his Symphony No.1. From his creative crisis, he was lifted up by composing his Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor. He asked a Moscower hypnotiser for help. To date, this work has been the composer1s most popular one, thank to the hearth-warming melodies and the diversity of the appearing characters.
The Vocalise that is closing the op.34 song cycle (1912), written for soprano or tenor, is a piece with piano accompaniment, without lyrics so it can be sung with any vowel as you like it. Transcriptions have been born from it in vain. The most important one of them was made by the composer himself: he was the symphonic version’s premiere’s conductor as well.
In the strict culture politics of the Stalinian Soviet Union, Dmitri Shostakovich worked looking for compromises: he had to meet the official requirements and the public’s taste too. In the Symphony No.10 in E minor (op.93), is also Stalin’s musical portrait appearing, so do the ghosts of the souls, who were suffering during his dictatorship. One can listen to even Shostakovich’s musical visit card.
