Born in Rijeka (Croatia), after his musical studies, he attended the specialization courses of the Teatro alla Scala. Since his debut in Ernani in 1982, he has often been invited to take part in La Scala’s seasons and tours. Highlights of his performances at La Scala include Guillaume Tell, under the baton of Riccardo Muti, and various productions, wich have also been recorded, such as Ifigenia Tauride, La donna del lago, La forza del destino and Rigoletto.
His brilliant operatic career brought him to perform on the world’s greatest stages, such as the Opéra National de Paris, Covent Garden, metropolitan, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra de Lyon, Liceu de Barcelona, Opernhaus in Zurich Teatro Comunale di Florence, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Arena di Verona, Teatro la Fenice in Venice. He also often invited by important concert institutions and festivals, such as Pesaro, Ravenna and Salzburg.
Giorgio Surian’s repertory ranges from baroque music to 20th century compositions, with a predilection for the belcanto roles. His remarkable vocal extension brought him also several baritone roles (such as Scarpia, Falstaff, Gianni Schicchi, Der fliegende Hollander, Carmen, etc..).
He opened the 2010/11 season performing Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Oper in Frankfurt, followed by L’elisir d’amore at the Opera de Oviedo and Marco Tutino’s Senso (world premiere) at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo. Among his future plans are Tosca at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and during a Japan tour with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Faust (Mefistofele) at the Metropolitan of New York.
His recent engagements include Tosca at the Opéra de Massy, I Shardana and Der fliegende Hollander at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari. The 2008/09 season has brought him to perform Marin Filiero in Sassari and Bergamo, Fidelio at the Teatro Comunale in Modena and Ferrara, once again with Claudio Abbado, Evgenij Onegin at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Les contes d’Hoffmann at the Opéra de Nice, Messa da Requiem by Verdi with the Orchestra Sinfonica G.Verdi of Milano and Cristo sul Monte degli Ulivi at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Carmen and Aida at the Arena in Verona and Tosca at the Teatro dell’Opera in rome. The 2007/08 season has brought him to perform Luisa Miller at the Teatro Regio in Parma and at the Opéra National de Paris, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, in Baden-Baden and Nancy, Mosè in Egitto and Tosca at the Teatro dell’Opera in Roma, The Rake’s progress at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Fidelio at the Teatro Real in Madrid, at the Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia and Baden-Baden and Tosca at the Festival Pucciniano in Torre del Lago. The 2006/07 season has brought him to perform Falstaff in Japan (on tour with the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), Tosca in Japan (on tour with the Teatro dell’Opera of Rome), Nabucco at the Opera de Toulon, Les contes d’Hoffmann at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Machbeth at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, Die Vogel at the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari and Don Pasquale al Teatro Verdi in Trieste. He closed the season 2007 with a warm success in Aida and Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Arena di Verona and Tosca at the Festival Pucciniano in Torre del Lago.
In the past Seasons he took part in such important productions as Fidelio, Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Don Pasquale, L’inconorazione di Poppea (staged by Luca Ronconi), Attila and Falstaff (under Zubin mahta’s baton and staged by Luca Ronconi) at the teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Lucia di Lammermoor at the Theatre du Capitole in toulouse, Lucrezia Borgia at the Festival de Opera de Oviedo and in Montecarlo, Nabucco and Ernani at the Opernhaus in Zurich, Attila in Japan (on tour with the teatro La Fenice di Venezia), Marie Victoire (cloteau), Petit Messe Solennelle, Tosca, Mefistofele and Il cordovano at the Teatro dell’Opera in Roma, Lohengrin (staged by Daniele Abbado and under Daniele Gatti’s baton), Lucrezia Borgia and L’inconorazione di Poppea at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Lucia di Lammermoor and La damnation de Faust at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Hamlet by Thomas at the Teatro Regio in Torino, Luisa Miller at the Teatro di San Carlo in Napoli, Il barbiere di Siviglia and Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro alla Scala and Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Metropolitan.
