The institutional reconstruction of the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003 opened up new prospects to the musical life of Pécs and the region. It was a major step that made the concert season and the repertoire complete. It is unprecedented in Hungary that two orchestras work in one institution: the concert orchestra of 73 members and the symponietta of 22 members.
The Symphonietta of Pécs plays an important role in the musical productions of the National Theatre of Pécs as a chamber symphonic orchestra. The rich repertoire and expertise of the 45-year-old opera department has helped the theatre establish its well-deserved reputation.
The Symphonietta of Pécs is greatly involved in the musical education of children and young people in the region by giving 52 concerts for them in the county towns of the three counties.
Future plans include giving more symphonic concerts. The excellent artists and its structure make the orchestra able to play rare pieces of music, the instrumentation of which is for orchestras in between classic chamber and concert orchestras.
This repertoire has never been played in Pécs and the region, so it is a must, a challenge and an exciting adventure. The establishment of the orchestra makes it possible that music, culture and the joy of listening to a concert can become an everyday experience in bigger and smaller towns of the region. The Symphonietta of Pécs wishes to give chamber concerts during this season in Pécs, Siófok, Dombóvár, Mohács, Barcs, Szigetvár, Paks and Siklós.
