About the Programme

What inspires a composer? As the source of his Don Juan, Richard Strauss points to a poem of Lenau; but Mozart's Don Giovanni, which he had conducted just before he wrote his symphonic poem, inspired him, too.  The muse and also the poet of Wagners songs was Mathilde Wesendonck, a rich Wagner-patron's young wife, whom also Wagner wasn't uninterested for. Mahler denoted the song "Das himmlische Lebent’ (Heavenly Life), from the last movement of the Symphony No.4 as not only a starting but also a forming and inspiring force of his large-scale work. The soloist of the concert is Andrea Rost, the conductor Christian Schumann.
