At the time of Bach, the Christmas Oratorio certainly did not sound the same way as today, featuring Ingrid Kertesi , Andrea Meláth, Dávid Szigetvári, István Kovács, and the Budapest Studio, conducted by András Vass. The title is misleading: the work (or rather works) is not an oratorio in Handelian sense, but a series of six cantatas, which were originally performed in Leipzig on six different days: on the three days of Christmas, on New Year's Day, on the following Sunday, and at Twelfth Night. The fact that the individual cantatas are composed for various instrumentation further confirms that, although they are closely related, Bach did not imagine them as a continuous, uninterrupted performance. It is very common that not the whole cycle is presented, but as this time as well, just part of it.
