IV. Ferdinand, the king of Naples considered himself as a virtuoso of the musical instrument called "lira organizzata". So, he gave a commission to Joseph Haydn to compose pieces for this hurdy-gurdy-like instrument. The master responded to the invitation with 9 nocturnes, which were later over-orchestrated according to the taste of the Londoners: he used flute, oboe, trumpet, horn, and strings in the G major Notturno.
"They give the impression that these two musicians’ meeting was necessary." – wrote about the Ferenc Snétberger-Markus Stockhausen duo R. von der Kellen, in a professional journal. The Landscapes (Dawn, Carefree, Twilight) for guitar and trumpet marks a beginning of a fruitful collaboration.
M. Stockhausen’s Ascent and Pause is written for solo trumpet and orchestra. The piece was inspired by a picture of the artist J. Itten, it explores the borders between composition and improvisation, it is open for any new and unexpected.
Ferenc Snétberger composed his work titled In Memory for my People in 1995, for the 50th anniversary of the Holocaust. The work, featuring a guitar and a symphonic orchestra, is an expression against human suffering. Roma melodies give the root of the piece.
