Schubert: Mass in A major
Schubert: Magnificat
It is obvious from Franz Schubert’s Mass in A flat major, which was explicitly modern at its time, that Schubert’s faith was defined not by dogmas and rules but belief in the redeeming love and romantic spirit. The composer wrote about his work so: “I dedicate it to the emperor or to his wife because I think, it is well made. The dedication’s plan did not succeeded; the venturous harmony and the too high requirements for the choir hindered that the piece would be understood at Schubert’s time. It talks to the audiences of yesterday and today, with gentle solemnity.
The Magnificat is one of Schubert’s many shorter church music compositions, which belongs to his teenager works. The tree-part works framing sections are brilliant and vivid; the calm and strolling middle part reflects to Maria’s song (He dethroned mighty ones). The Magnificat proves that the composer knew Haydn’s and Mozart’s styles well; and at the same time, the lyrical solo quartets, the valiant modulations, the challenges of the closings’ harmonic tensions give evidence about Schubert’s really creative geniality.
