About the Programme

If you are looking for common features of the oeuvres of Aram Khachaturian and of Béla Bartók, you might at first find the impact of folk music in their works as a common denominator. However, the Soviet-Hungarian past had a quite different point of view, how to match the two oeuvres: for a short period, both of (the music of) the Armenian and the Hungarian composers fell victim to the infamous 1948 musical decisions that affected the whole of the Eastern Bloc's musical life. Khachaturian’ ballet, the Spartacus –of which Adagio is also known as a separate concert piece and a soundtrack, too– was a product of the re-reconciliation with the system (1954). The Violin Concerto, however, was written before the Soviet participation in World War 2 (1940); the work can be heard in the interpretation of one of the youngest Kossuth Prize-winning artist, Kristóf Baráti. The final piece of the concert is Bartók's only opera, the Bluebeard's Castle. This gem of the 20th century musical theatre repertoire was also premiered at a shadow of a fateful war, in 1918. In the piece, which has had countless arrangements, this time, Andrea Meláth plays Judith and Krisztián Cser the Bluebeard.
