  • Wagner: Tannhäuser - Overture

The main character of Ferenc Liszt’s Mazeppa was a historical figure, a Cossack nobleman, whose story is genuinely followed by the music. The symphonic poem is based on Victor Hugo’s reading.

Liszt wrote his piano concertos as finishing of his virtuoso carrier. The premiere of the Piano Concerto in A major was played even not by the Maestro but his pupil, Hans von Bronsart volt. This opus is worthily belongs to the most popular Liszt-compositions.
Richard Wagner’s first success was his opera, the Rienzi. The Overture follows the tracks of C. M. von Weber, who was so admired by Wagner: it exhibits the characteristic moments of the opera, with decent glamour.

Wagner’s “eternal melodies” are hard to lift up from the surrounding musical material because their feature. But the separated orchestral parts are pearls, opening views to the whole operas. The Funeral March from the Götterdämmerung mourns for the hero and with him together the result of the human envy: the devastation. The Ride of the Valcyries illustrates the hurry of Wotan”s daughters, who are heading to the Walhalla with the fallen heroes. The Tannhäuser Overture is the astonishingly concentrated presentation of the entire work.
