About the Programme

Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, has been preserved in more versions (three in total), and the same applies to the overture of the piece; what is now called Fidelio Overture, means the last version, composed in 1814; it is also a composition that enjoys great popularity up to date as an independent work, played at concert halls. Beethoven’s piece is followed by a composition of a British composer Edward Elgar; the Cello Concerto, composed just after the First World War, in 1919, is the last major work of the composer, who was broken by the war and by the loss of his wife: Edgar stopped composing for the last 15 years of his life. The line ends with Sergei Rachmaninov's Second Symphony, which is a work that had a number of changes since its birth: ’although nowadays the four-movement piece is performed in its unabridged version, often it’s the shortened, more ‘compact’ version is played without the repetitions of the first movement.
