About the Programme

Rossini's opera, the Semiramis rarely is staged today, but its overture is a popular repertoire piece. The composer wrote an orchestral prelude especially to the scenes of this opera; in other cases, he willingly lent overtures from his own previous operas. The range and balance of musical ideas deservedly make the composition to one of the pearls of the genre. "I was dreaming about some scenes of pagan ritual in which the maiden chosen to be sacrifised danced herself to death" - as we read in Stravinsky’s memoire about the birth of the idea of The Rite of Spring Honegger called this ballet written in two-parts (The Adoration of the Earth, The Great Sacrifice) "the atomic bombe of music, because of its ground-breaking nature.
