About Gioacchino Rossini's death (1868), word spread quickly in the European musical world; and soon across Europe, performances, concerts were staged to tribute to thr composer of William Tell, The Barber of Seville and many other world-renowned opera, who earned his biggest successes in Paris. In Rossini’s native Italy, another prominent representative of the genre of opera, Giuseppe Verdi took the commemorators together, and wanted to remember of his compatriot with a special mourning mass, of which all movements had been composed by other Italian composers. Verdi did finish the movement, appointed to himself, the last one, the three-part Libera me; but because of the differences emerging between the collaborators, the work ultimately never haes been completed. However, shortly after that (1873), another death occurred, this time one of the composer's good friend, the poet Manzoni died. This was the direct motivation for Verdi to complete himself the Requiem, started a few years earlier, which he presented in 1874. Verdi's Requiem is not only an essential piece of the genre, but also one of the most successful and most frequently played compositions by the composer, as well.
