Ernő Dohnányi and Leó Weiner are such important composers of the last century’s first half, by European standard, whose careers were by-passed by the bold innovations; instead of investigating the distant future, both worked on keeping and further considering the values of the 19th century tradition. Dohnányi’s Festival Overture, which is, worthly to its title, festive, but also playful, was premiered together with Kodály’s Psalmus Hungaricus and Bartók’s Dance Suite, in 1923. Weiner, who was mentioned sometimes as the Hungarian Mendelssohn, wrote music from Mihály Vörösmarty’s drama with the same title, in a form of a ballet and a six-movement orchestral suite: the latter is a brilliant characterisation of the story’s players – with musical tools. Between the two compositions from the early 20th century, a real delicacy is: Kálmán Oláh’s Concerto written for piano and jazz band. The symphonic transcription of the 2001 work was born in 2004.
