J. S. Bach's 157th cantata (Ich Lasse dich nicht, du mich segnest Dennen - "I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me!”) is formed of the words of Jacob, who is threatened by death and is quarrelling with an angel. The Bible verse as the one crying out to Jesus is set in front of us by the master in a tenor-bass duet, put a string of affectionately sounding recitatives and arias to it. The only chorus movement of the composition is the final chorale ("Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht"), a framework for thoughts of one who has faith in the Savior and does not want to let Him go.
Michael Haydn's most appreciated works were created just in the most problematic field of classical style, in the genre of religious music. According to the title page, the Requiem is a funeral music piece due the death of S. von Schrattenbach, the Archbishop of Salzburg. The composer, however, had suffered a much bigger loss than loosing his Master: he lamented for his little child with this music work, which is widely regarded as one that could also serve as a model for Mozart's Requiem.
