At its guest appearance in Osijek on, the Pannon Philharmonic is playing two of the perhaps best known works of the past two centuries, two works that have significant roles not only in the history of music, but also in the general cultural history. Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, op. 125 is clearly the key work of the 19th-century Western music, which influenced the fate of the genre of symphony until the World War II and even more; and that meant the starting and reference point for the unfolding musical styles during the century. The Carmina Burana does not have such a dominant force in music history: with his works, Carl Orff only outlined a possible future direction of the 20th-century music, which even opposed the aesthetics and system requirements of modernity in several respects. The "secular songs" written based on a 13th-century poetry collection still demanded attention for themselves among the most successful music works of art, and even found their place in the popular culture, as well.
