At the Gala Concert on the Day of the City of last year, Johannes Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture gave the tuning tone to the anniversary year of the University of Pécs. The composer wrote the work compiled from student songs for the commission of the University of Wroclaw that granted him an honorary doctorate in 1880. This year, the overture is going to be heard together with another work of the composer, the Double Concerto. The concerto written for cello, violin, and orchestra in 1887 is a special document about the artist friendship between Brahms and József Joachim, as well as the last orchestral composition of the German composer.
The interesting fact about the work that it was originally meant to be a symphony, is perhaps explaining why the soloists are accompanied by an unusually large ensemble in the composition.
The concert is a co-production of the University of Pécs and the Pannon Philharmonic.
